Design of Rural to Urban: Conversion of Agricultural Wastes in Local
Workshop | 26-28 September
The "Design of Rural to Urban: Conversion of Agricultural Wastes in Local" workshop, organized under the leadership of Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, with the participation of various NGOs active in agriculture, the Chamber of Architects, the Chamber of Agriculture, local governments, aims to contribute to the reduction of solid waste production, recycling of agricultural waste generated after agricultural production, and the conservation of the environment and natural resources within the framework of sustainable development goals in Turkey.
As a parallel event within the Maruf on the Go initiative, the workshop aims to strengthen national and regional development planning to support positive economic, social, and environmental connections between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas. The workshop aims to bring together multiple stakeholders from rural and urban areas. With the workshop, a co-design approach will be used to transform sunflower stalks, one of the agricultural wastes in Tekirdağ, into various urban facilities for local use. The three-day in-person workshop will bring together farmers, academics, designers, local officials, university students, and NGOs in a university environment. In the first stage of the workshop, seminars will be held by farmers and experts on agricultural waste and management, innovative material design with natural raw materials, and the sunflower plant, followed by discussions. In the second stage, participants are expected to transform sunflower stalks into functional materials and performative products with various contributions.
There are very few studies and applications in Turkey regarding the use of sunflower waste in material and product design. The event is expected to contribute to raising ecological and environmental awareness, increasing awareness of waste, and strengthening dialogue between rural and urban areas as an effort to address this gap.
