Mapping the Marmara Region
Workshop | 14 August - 4 September
For the first time at MARUF21, within the scope of the "Mapping Marmara" workshop initiated in partnership between the Marmara Municipalities Union and AURA Istanbul, urban planner Eda Yücesoy, architect and artist Sinan Logie, and architect Tansel Korkmaz led an examination of Dilovası-Altınova, Orhangazi-Gemlik, Biga, Gelibolu, and Çorlu. As a result of the research, significant data about the rapidly changing urban-rural dynamics of the region were obtained to understand the structure of the Marmara region on a macro-regional scale. It was determined that between 2000 and 2018, construction increased by 93.2%, industrial areas increased by 209.2%, while agricultural areas decreased by 9.8% and green areas decreased by 6.5% in the Marmara Region. The outputs of the workshop were exhibited at the Chamber of Architects Greater City Branch from October 27 to November 7, 2021. In the summer of 2022, technical visits were organized within the scope of the workshop in Izmit-Sapanca, Yalova, and Bandırma. The research team documented stress points between human activities and natural resources along the ecological corridor surrounding the eastern part of the Marmara Sea basin and completed their work to advance resilience and disaster-related studies next year.
Within MARUF23, AURA Istanbul will organize a workshop under the guidance of architect Gülhis Duygun, focusing on the ecological corridors surrounding the Marmara Sea and its western region, with a special focus on Çanakkale, together with a research team consisting of architects, urban planners, and landscape architects. They will continue to document stress points between human activities and natural resources. The aim of the research is to identify new potential strategies for rural and urban development in this critical era of the climate crisis and capitalism. The outputs of the workshop will be shared through an exhibition at MARUF23.
